UTPB's early student body were trailblazers, as described by UTPB's second President, V.R. Cardozier in University of Texas of the Permian Basin; a history: "The average age of the student body was 30. Most of those who enrolled in the first year had been out of high school several years, had worked for a living, … a higher percentage were married, and, with few exceptions, they lived in the area and commuted. ...Half of the class enrollments at UTPB were after 5 p.m. … But after 5 p.m. every classroom was occupied until 10 p.m. ...Considering the low regard with which the “oil patch” is held by most Texans, and that fact that most of the students were first-generation college goers, this alone was a signal achievement."
