Abstract
This study was conducted to determine if instruction in problem solving strategies would increase student achievement in mathematical problem solving. The study involved a control and an experimental group of eighth grade students. Limited English proficient students were included in the study to determine if they would benefit from the instruction as well. The experimental group participated in a unit of instruction in problem solving strategies prior to taking the post-test The students' 1996 seventh grade TAAS results were used as the pre-test. The 1996 eighth grade TAAS was administered for the post-test. Overall, the study revealed that the unit of instruction had a positive impact on the students.
